The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank, a body corporate under the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries with a mandate to take a leading role in establishing a comprehensive National Animal Breeding Programme in Uganda wishes to recruit the following; .

Reporting To : Deputy Technical Manager Breeding
Overall Job Purpose : To assess, develop, refine and implement the current and future livestock molecular genetics techniques in animal breeding and genetics
Age Limit : 30-55 Years

Specific Responsibilities
• Participates in the livestock sample collection for genetic studies and germplasm gene-banking in the various part of the country
• Oversee the elaboration of standard-operating procedures, risk management plans and other elements of the molecular laboratory and gene-bank’s Quality-Management System
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure
• Prepare and properly label reagents required for laboratory testing
• Verify proper instrument function by checking and calibrating lab instruments and documents data
• Maintain laboratory safety programs and train personnel in laboratory safety techniques
• Participate in the development of molecular genetic evidence-based breeding programs or breeds conservation strategies
• Collaborate with other professionals to conduct appropriate animal genetic and phenotypic analyses
• Contribute to scientific studies aimed at enhancing the conservation and encouraging the use of genetic resources
• Search scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures most appropriate for animal genetic research goals
• Prepare results of experimental findings for presentation at professional conferences or in scientific journals
• Plan or conduct basic genomic and biological research related to areas such as animal genetic characterization and gene expression, and nucleic acid complexes
• Coordinate day-to-day operations of gene-bank units and staff working on characterization, germplasm acquisition, DNA banking, conservation (cryopreservation), germplasm viability, genetic integrity, distribution, data management and documentation
• Participates in providing technical support for the procurement and distribution of appropriate laboratory materials and tools/ equipment.

Basic Requirements
• A Bachelor of Science degree in Veterinary Medicine or Animal Science or equivalent qualification from a recognized degree awarding institution.
• A Masters Degree in Animal Sciences with specialization in population genetics, diversity studies and molecular genetics methodologies or related works is a MUST.
• A postgraduate qualification with specialization in population genetics, diversity studies and molecular genetics methodologies or related works is a MUST.
• Working experience of at least three (3) years in animal industry is a prerequisite.
